There are so many reasons why I love Matchbox Twenty. First of all, I grew up listening to them, the three I remember the most being Unwell, 3AM and If You're Gone.
Another reason: [Most] of their songs have many meanings so almost everybody can find some way to relate.
If you have never heard these songs, I suggest listening to them without the music videos so you can pay attention to the words and meanings, then, by all means, enjoy these amazing videos!
The first memory I have of this song is when I was about three or four. I had it stuck in my head, it was past my bed time and I was just sitting in my room. I remember these lines:
"All day, stairing at the ceiling making friends with shadows on my wall, and all night, hearing voices tellin me that I should get some sleep, cause tomorrow might be good, for something"
"Talking to myself in public, dodging glances on the train. And I know, I know they've all been talking bout me, I can hear them whisper, and it makes me think there must be something wrong with me"
"But I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell."
After that, I heard it on the radio quite a bit. A few years after discovering Youtube, I decided to look up this song. I first found the lyric version and read every word. It actually made me cry. My brother has autism, you see, and every word of this song reminded me of him, and after that, I have been able to understand him a lot better. Yes, we still fight, but sometimes I can just think about this song and know a little bit how he feels.
My second favorite song of all time is 3AM. Recently, I found out that this song was writen about when Rob Thomas's mother had cancer and he was 12 or 13 years old.
This song is also good in many different versions, if you want, you should go look them up: Tabitha's Secret, acoustic and Kyle Cook.
"And she says baby, its 3am, I must be lonely."
"The rain's gunna wash away, I belive this."
"The clock on the wall has been stuck at 3 day and days"
"But outside it stopped raining"
This song, I remember hearing on the radio frequently when I was younger, in fact, I still hear it on the radio today! I like everything about this song, how it sounds, the words, everything.
My favorite parts are "I bet my hands I can stay here, I bet you need more than you mind"
and the end, the last time he says "It's a little bit of something in me, and everything... in you"
It's so beautiful!
I found this song only a couple months after it came out in September of last year. I love how it starts out slow and mysterious:
"Come inside the air I breath, while the band still plays, it's the end, of the coldest week, come down into the sea"
And then it BURSTS into life with
"When the sun breaks over the edge of an English town, it pulls me away from a bad dream and I dont know why, but I know I'm not ever going back."
I was/am very impressed by all the songs on North (their latest album), so I am going to share a few more highlights from there.
Warning: Watch the video at your own risk! I really didn't like the video, except for the second where it shows a TV with a shot from Unwell on it.
Other than that, this song is great!
"And don't you ever fade away, yeah"
This is my little sister's favorite song from the album!
Those are just a few songs to get you started, I will post more Matchbox Twenty later, but in the mean time I will share lots of other bands :)
